Robert Cooper's 2008 Update on Stage-Gate Idea-to-Launch Processes - 'Unplugged'

In recent studies 70% of executives surveyed confirmed the existence of an excellent Stage-Gate system in their organization. However, upon closer examination of those systems, many subtle but critical errors and gaps were uncovered. Many of these errors were traced back to an inaccurate interpretation of how a Stage-Gate process should be designed and/or implemented. These innocent misunderstandings are relatively easy to correct and well worth the effort, especially if you could benefit from a lift in your performance.

If your company relies on a Stage-Gate process to drive winning ideas from inception to launch you will want to read this brand new article Bob authored for the Journal of Product Innovation this month. Consider it ‘Cooper Unplugged’ as he speaks candidly about the many ways companies misinterpret or ineffectively customize their Stage-Gate Processes. Bob also shares new examples of how companies are creatively ‘evolving’ Stage-Gate processes to remain current with the latest trends. This is a good read and I strongly recommend it. See below if you are interested in additional resources on this topic. Read Article.

Implementation Tip #3 – Enrolling existing projects into a new process
By Mike Wiebe, Principal Consultant

Your Stage-Gate Implementation Plan should highlight the official date in which all ideas must enter the new process. This is fairly straight forward. However, most companies introducing Stage-Gate have a pipeline of existing projects underway – some good and some bad. How, when and should these projects enter Stage-Gate? Mike Wiebe offers some quick advice on this topic. Read More.
