Project Management for Innovation Project Leaders and Managers

This two day workshop provides essential information and direction for those who have been asked to lead or manage an innovation project, through a Stage-Gate® innovation process, but who have limited experience in the field of NPD project leadership or management.

The Stage-Gate idea-to-launch model is the industry standard for managing new product development innovation excellence. This widely-implemented process elegantly integrates numerous performance-driving practices into an easy-to-understand play-book for success.

Our highly interactive two-day course focuses on project leadership and management methods that can be used immediately when leading a NPD project team. Workshop leaders will strip away the jargon and give practical techniques and tools that will improve personal effectiveness and increase the probability of success when leading innovation projects.

A NPD Process Leader / Manager's job profile can be split into six discrete but complementary roles:

  • Project Leader
  • Change Agent / Champion
  • Team Leader
  • Project Planner
  • Risk Manager
  • Implementation Manager

Mastering each of these is critical for achieving success when leading a NPD project team. For each of these roles the course will outline the core responsibilities involved and the ideal competencies required, i.e. skills, knowledge and behaviors.

Through interactive exercises and personal planning activities, attendees will complete personal and business development action plans to ensure that the program has practical application back in the workplace.

Who should attend?

This workshop provides an introduction to project management for those managing, leading or working within an innovation project team.

It is suitable for managers from any function who are seeking training to help build skills and confidence.

By the end of the course participants will have the knowledge to:

  • Understand what it means to be a NPD project manager and the skills involved
  • Distinguish between the product innovation process and project management
  • Identify and engage stakeholders
  • Create a clear communication plan around their project
  • Create a realistic and well-defined project schedule
  • Identify project risks and assign mitigating actions
  • Motivate team members and manage the performance of a project team
  • Implement an innovation project
